Travel
In 1946 we all travelled from Buenos Aires to England on the Highland Chieftain, a passenger boat.

For the winter holidays (December) we used to drive in my Granny's Hillman Minx up, via Venado Tuerto, to a place in the countryside in Cordoba. We were each assigned out own horse, so we would spend all day riding about, sometimes alone.

In the summer we would also drive down to Miramar, near Mar del Plata. I remember gettingso sunburnt on my back that the skin became hard that it would come off in plates. Never did me any permanent harm. No Factor 50, then.

In 1950 my sister Alison and I flew from BA to Santiago de Chile, as my parents had migrated there several months before. I remember being frightened by a loose rivet on the wing outside my window. The plane was four-engined Vickers Argonaut. We took a 3 hour train ride to Vina del Mar, where we had a 3rd floor flat by the seaside.
In Chile we had a van, actually a small Austin A40 pick-up, with a canvas cover on the back. We once took a long trip up north (1952), to La Serena. At night we stopped by the side of the road, my parents and Alison sleeping in the back and me in the front. We didn't even think of any danger from locals.

After my parents and Alison moved up to Lima, leaving me at school in Santiago, I took a trip by plane up to Lima (1954). It was a twin-engined Martin 4-0-4, and it took various stops along the way. At one stop the pilot let me sit right behind him as he landed.

Then it was time for me to come to school in England, by myself, in mid-1955. In those days it was a DC6. I flew to BA, then to Rio, then to Dakar, then Porto and then London.

From Berkhamsted school I had a skiing trip to Obergurgl in Austria (1957). We went be train, and go up to all sorts of nonsense.

I had one trip to Lima on holiday when I was 16 (1958). I was most impressed that my friend Alistair Bell of the same age had a coche preparado racing car which he drove about in, a 1946 Ford coupe with no mudguards, grill, boot cover etcv and a noisy engine. I was due to go back via New York, so I needed an American visa, and in the US embassy I had to swear that I was not, and never had been, a member of the communist party.

My parents came for 3 months in England in 1960, and bought a new Ford Zephyr, and wo took a trip to France, Italy, Switzerland and Germany in it. We crossed the channel by air in a Bristol Freighter.

In 1962 I went to Lima on holiday. My parents were horrified at my Cecil Gee lapel-less knitted jacket, and took me to the local Sears store to get a proper jacket.
